A’Ibom: Court Remands 7 Illegal Miners in Prison



Magistrate Court sitting in Ikot Edibon, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area has earlier today sent seven illegal miners to Prison in Akwa Ibom State.

The seven (7) illegal miners which were arraigned by the government of Akwa Ibom for illegal dredging at Udua Jimmy dredging site in Ikot Ntung in Nsit Ubium LGA on February 5th 2021, were ordered to be remanded at the state correctional facility pending when the final ruling would be made.

This act is in line with the state government’s resolve to sanitize and regulate sand mining in the state.

The Akwa Ibom State government through the Honourable Commissioner for Environment Sir Charles Udoh, had warned illegal miners in the state to get proper documentations or risk prosecution by the government for illegal dredging.

The seven people as arraigned are, Akanimoh Isaac Willie, Obinna Okoye, Sylvanus Akanimoh Isaac, Jackson Udofia Jackson, Abasiama Asuquo Sampson, Sunday Anietie Sunday, and Joseph Akpan To.

Having been charged on a two-count charges, which are conspiracy to commit a felony to wit, and Illegal dredging of sand at Udua Jimmy dredging site, Ikot Ntung in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, which is contrary to Section 552, of the criminal code, cap. 38, vol. 2 of the Akwa Ibom state laws, 2000.

According to the court, “the aforementioned persons with others now at large, between the period of 5th – 8th February, 2021 at Ndua Dredging site , ikot Ntung in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area did Illegal Sand dredge without license, subsequently causing injury to the environment,contrary to section 131(a) and (d) of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining act, 2007 and it’s punishable under section 133 of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining act, 2007”.

After the court proceedings, the Judge adjourned the case to Wednesday 24th of February, 2021, demanding that all the accused be remanded in the correctional Service till the next hearing day
