The leadership of Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) Akwa Ibom State chapter, has commended the wife of state governor, Her Excellency Dr. Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel, for using her non-governmental platform, the Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Path- Initiative (FEYReP), to combat rape, gender based violence and other loathsome practices against women in the state.

The chairperson of the organization, Mrs. Joy Ameingheme gave the commendation on Thursday, when she led members of her executive on a courtesy call to the wife of governor, Dr. Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel in her office at the Government House, Uyo.

Mrs. Ameinghemen said she was abreast with the programmes of the governor’s wife whom she said has become a reference point in the country, stating that her human-angle initiatives especially for the womenfolk and the vulnerable constituencies deserve commendation.

“I have read a lot about your programmes even before my husband came here a few weeks ago. Each time I read about you especially your vociferous advocacy against gender based violence, rape and defilement, I feel so proud of being a woman. I am here today with my members to say that you’ve done exceedingly well your Excellency, and I pray you continue to do more in the years ahead,” the wife of the state Police chief said.

On the provision of shelter for the vulnerable in the state by the governor’s wife, the wife of the Police boss said she was particularly impressed by the effort of FEYReP at providing safe abodes for the susceptible, praying that God will grant her more grace to break new grounds.

She however solicited for assistance from the governor and wife for the completion of the ongoing secretariat complex of the group in the state which she says when completed will have a special desk for women related matters.

Responding, the wife of the state governor, Dr. Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel in her remarks thanked the group for the visit, saying as a body responsible for the welfare of women in the barracks, she had to meet and interact with them.

She informed the visitors that though FEYReP’s effort at curbing the behemoth of rape and violence against women has yielded positive result, a few bad eggs were still going around causing more harm to women.

“Over the past few years, our campaign against rape has witnessed tremendous outcomes but a few bad eggs still go round perpetuating more evil in the state. My humble appeal today is that you take back the message against rape and violence against women to your spouses. Tell them that no one guilty of rape should be granted bail. Not at any cost,” Dr. Emmanuel pleaded.

On women empowerment, she encouraged the leadership of the association to work on empowering its members especially widows of fallen officers to be economically stable, saying when women are empowered, the society will be better off.

“I am very passionate about women having something to do. I encourage you to evolve programmes that will provide women with lifelines in the barracks so they can meaningfully engage themselves,” First Lady Martha said.

While admonishing them to continue to be a pillar of support for their husbands, the governor’s wife asked the group to help sensitize its members on the need for family planning, cleanliness and ethical reorientation within the barracks.

She also called on them not to abdicate their responsibilities as mothers in the family, saying sound morals and etiquettes are the fulcrum of a successful family.
