Women across the three Senatorial Districts of Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday, stormed the streets of Uyo in their numbers in a solidarity match to reaffirm their unalloyed loyalty and total support for the state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel’s second term bid come 2019.
The unprecedented crowd comprising women from Uyo, Ikot Ekpene and Eket Senatorial Districts took to the Banquet Hall Ground, Government House, Uyo to tell the Governor “No Shaking” and that they are not deterred as far as his 2019 second term ambition is concerned.
Sparkled in beautiful colours, the women proudly justified their stance on the Governor’s impressive scorecard in his first tenure of office and for the sake of equity which his predecessors, Arch. Obong Victor Attah and Sen. Godswill Akpabio from Uyo Senatorial District and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District respectively, had served two uninterrupted terms in the state. Therefore, Governor Udom Emmanuel must also complete his eight uninterrupted years in office.
In her remarks, the Dean of Commissioners and Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Gloria Edet, noted that the state has enjoyed tremendous development in just three and a half years of the Governor even in the face of recession ravaging the nation’s economy. “You have not disappointed Akwa Ibom State. You have proven to the whole world that you have the capacity. We have come to tell you that you are the only acceptable candidate for the 2019 governorship election.”
Speaking on behalf of women in Eket, Uyo and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial Districts, Obonganwan Patience Ukpa, Dr (Mrs) Ekaette Ebong Okon and Hon. Inibehe Silas, unanimously resolved that “We are not deterred by the defection of the immediate past governor, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), because since you came into office, you have brought an end to cultism, kidnapping, killings and other social vices, and restored peace in the state.
“If we could vote for non-indigenous first ladies (Attah’s and Akpabio’s wives) for eight years, we will do more to defend the first indigenous civilian first lady for eight years.”
Also speaking, former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, described Gov Emmanuel as a bridge builder who is not only working in Akwa Ibom but also reaching out to other states of the federation, adding that “He is detribalised and believes in one developed Nigeria.”
The two-time former governor expressed optimism that after eight years of Gov Emmanuel’s administration, Akwa Ibom will see development that it has never seen.
In response, Gov Emmanuel and his wife, Martha, thanked the women for reaffirming their stance and the show of solidarity for the Governor and PDP, and charged them not to allow anybody to deceive them with the intent of collecting their PVCs.
