The Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE), Engr. Akaninyene Ekong, has been honoured for his Outstanding Leadership and Safety Advocacy in Nigeria by the Lagos State Government.

The award is coming as one of the many received in recent time by the NISafetyE Chairman, Akwa Ibom State chapter, for his meritorious services in the global fight for hazard free and safe workplace.

Presenting the award on Thursday, the Chairman of the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), Hakeem Dickson during the launch of Vision Zero Conference, said the award was to motivate performance and undeterred pursuit towards ensuring that Nigeria is ranked amongst the safest work zones in the world.

Hakeem said the Lagos State Safety Commission has created the Vision Zero awareness to generate the passion for a mindset change towards zero harm in workplaces, stating further that the need for a mindset change and behavioural and attitudinal change cannot be overemphasized as the entire workplace system needs serious overhauling.

Ekong, who has been an accredited Safety Consultant right from the inception of the Lagos State Safety Commission(LSSC) said the award has added value to his piled up jobs in the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers in the State.

He stated that the Akwa Ibom state chapter of NISafetyE is working assiduously towards partnering multinationals, governments and other institutions within the state to provide quality safety knowledge and required qualifications that will fill job openings.

He noted that A’ibom people have been deprived of so many technical jobs in oil servicing firms because they lack requisite knowledge and technical safety skills to fuse into the position.

“NISafetyE, is ready to bring such knowledge and qualifications to those who need them”

“We are currently training hundreds and if government institution comes into partnership, it will multiply the number of trainees that will be sent out into the labour market” – He added.

Ekong ,also used the opportunityto sympathize with the families of those who lost their lives in the PMS Tanker Explosion accident on the Otedola bridge in Lagos State and said NISafetyE will be working to proffer solutions to problems of Public Safety and other Safety issues in the Safety Engineering 2018 National Conference to be held in Uyo later in the year.

He however, called for enhanced synergy with the AKHA and relevant government agencies for the accelerated passage of the bill and establishment of the Akwa Ibom State Safety Commission for regulation, enforcement ,monitoring and compliance to International best practices in the State so as to ensure Public Safety.
