Youths of Akwa Ibom State have been urged to quit the tradition of searching for white collar jobs and rather focus their energy and intellect at creating inventions, innovations and services that would benefit the society and by extension make them employers of labour in line with the ‘Dakkada’ philosophy of the current administration in the state.

This was the admonition of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Directorate of Marketing and Brand Management, Mr. Sam Edoho while speaking to youths, students and education administrators who gathered at Government Secondary School, Afagha Eket, for the Leadership and Behavioural Ethics Training organized by the State Government for Public School Prefects/Refresher Course for School Guidance and Councilors.

The Governor’s aide also seized the opportunity to motivate the students with the four pillars of the “Dakkada” philosophy, encouraging them to imbibe the qualities of hard work, integrity, excellence and the spirit of entrepreneurship.

He said, “I’ am encouraging you people here to find something doing, invent something and create something that all of us will use and benefit. If you do so you will never look for employment instead you will employ your colleagues. A young Akwa Ibom daughter by name Blessing Emah recently developed ekpang nkukwo flour to reduce the stress and time for preparing that meal from over six hours to less than an hour. Blessing Emah’s example simply shows you that the things I am asking you to do are not beyond you.”

The ‘Dakkada’ helmsman also applauded Governor Udom Emmanuel for his achievements in human capital development in the state.

According to him, although the current administration in the state is leading the way in various aspects of governance and development, with the leadership training to school prefects, the governor has set another standard in human capacity development.

In his words “The government of Deacon Udom Emmanuel from day one has shown that education is one of its key priorities, and he has invested in education in many ways.

“First of all he has continued the free and compulsory education at basic levels, Secondly he has gone ahead to pay students’ WAEC and SSCE exam fees, over 600million is paid every year for these exams. But with this particular programme, His Excellency is showing that he believes in human capital development. This is not the first, he has done that in many spheres, but to bring it to secondary schools, which is at the level were these students are becoming adults, I think it is wonderful and really commendable. I’ve not heard of it happening anywhere. When we were prefects, we did not receive such training. This is solid training and development for our children, we should all commend it”.

The Leadership and Behavioural Ethics Training Programme for Akwa Ibom state public schools and Refresher course for Guidance and Counselors is a human capital development programme organized by the education monitoring unit of the Governor’s office, under the supervision of the SSA to the Governor on Education Monitoring, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet.

The programme which is held across the three senatorial districts of the state is aimed at equipping the school prefects with leadership skills and behavioural ethics needed to help them exert control and positive change amongst students of secondary schools across Akwa Ibom state.
