ICPC, UNDP Complete Capacity Building Training Program in Eket

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) with support from United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have completed A-Two day capacity building program in Eket.

The training which was facilitated by the Anti- Corruption and Transparency Support Initiative (ACTSI) is a capacity building program that will guide the grassroots to engage in budget process at the grassroots level.

The objective of the program according to the facilitators, is to equip and encourage the grassroots to be involved in budget processes through identification of community important needs and inclusion in the LG budget, expose participants to different ways of engaging with policy makers for the improvement of communities, provide the grassroots with information and skills to foster interaction with governance structures for enhanced transparency and accountability, and deliver ICPC anti-corruption message to the grassroots

According to Mr. Edidiong Sambo (one of the facilitators), the expected outcome of this program has a direct impact on people in the grassroots, who have been sitting on the sidelines during the budgeting process.

He also asserted that on program completion, participants will be able contribute to the success of Budget Advocacy and Monitoring Group (BAMG) at the LGAs expected to drive sustainability of the training has enormous objectives and benefits to the people at the grassroots.

“They will also be empowered with the knowledge to conduct advocacy to the policy makers at the LG and state using the identified needs and with the help of LG BPRS ensure that priority needs of the communities are included in the LG budget” – he said.

Speaking in the training, the Chairman, AKHA Committee on Finance and appropriation, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Usoro Akpanusoh, who was represented by Hon. Nkereuwem Aquawo , said that the program is a welcome initiative to people who do not see the importance of budget participation.

He said that the program will certainly ginger up the grassroots to contribute in one way or the other towards the making of a budget that can be rightly tagged “The peoples budget”

In a goodwill message from Oron TC, Pst. Anthony Bassey, he complimented the facilitators for advocating grassroots participation in budgeting process in the local government.

He stressed that he is an ardent supporter of the initiative, and very optimistic that the workshop will have salutary effect in limiting the seeds of corruption drastically at the grassroots, and reawaken their consciousness in budgetary participation.
