- Gives an open Cheque to overall best graduating student
Akwa Ibom State Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel has called on the Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. Eno James Ibanga to spawn internally generated revenue (IGR) through researches for a reinvestment in sectors that will aid realize the institution’s set goals and targets.
In his keynote address during the 2nd and 3rd convocation ceremony of the institution Wednesday at the main campus in Ikot Akpaden, the Governor noted that education is an essential ingredient in the transformation of any society, and it is the cardinal responsibility of his government to ensure that children have access to affordable and quality education.
Governor Emmanuel who had commissioned a Pinnacle Theater, Digital Laboratory for Languages, commercial palm oil mill and other facilities precursor to the convocation in the institution, was so impressed with the quality of education, discipline and leadership competency driving the institution, fostering academic excellence and winning laurels in time recent.
He maintained that education should be encouraged, doled out encomiums and satisfaction to both the school management and the graduating students, saying he is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that those who have graduated will stand the test of competency in the macro world.
Emmanuel reiterated that his government shares the sentiments of the Late Nelson Mandela, who asserted that “Education is the greatest weapon that can be used to change the world” and as such, his administration will not just encourage but will promote academic excellence. To this end, he offered an open Cheque of either employment in the civil service or further studies to the overall graduate of the institution.
Announcing the automatic employment to the overall best graduating student, the governor said, “this is an administration that encourages excellence. Therefore in keeping with the tradition of my administration, I hereby direct the the overall best graduating student with CGPA of 4.90 to proceed to the office of the head of civil service to tell us if he wants to pick up automatic employment or to further his studies.
The occasion which signaled the graduation of 916 students also witnessed the conferment of Honorary Doctorate on Management Science on Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, who was represented by Sir Emem Akpabio.
