Should Emem Otoabasi Andrew Essien Be Abandoned To Die?
EDET EDET- EKET.
One of the fundamental objectives of government is to ensure the well-being of its people. Beyond the imaginary, government who attain to the pangs of the people with genuine measures of alleviating it, does not just become a mantra on the lips of the people, or succeed to scribble their name in the hearts of the populace, but will create a generic conviction that their aims and objectives is 50% for the people. Although subsisting governments has tried in diverse ways to meet the peoples demand, it is still obvious, that the gap created between the non –attended to cases “which are very challenging” and the mitigated, reels in the direction misconstruing government impartations to be selective.
One of such negated “non-attended to, that needs urgent attention/help from government” cases, is that of a bedridden EMEM OTOABASI ANDREW ESSIEN, from Atiamkpat Village, Awa Ward 4, in Onna Local Government (Governor Udom Emmanuel/ Hon. Nse Essien’s hometown), a son of late Hon. Otoabasi Andrew Essien, a one-time house member who represented Awa/Nung Ndem state constituency in the House of Assembly during the Obong Akpan Isemin’s regime, who was diagnosed of End Stage Renal Disease, Diabetes mellitus since 2015.
End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) as defined is the final stage of chronic kidney disease in which the kidneys no longer function well enough to meet the needs of daily life. The importance of kidney to the human life is very vital just like blood is, which means that if not treated soonest, posterity stands to miss a supposed Senator, in the person of this son of ONNA extraction “Emem Otoabasi Essien”, a Bsc. Degree holder in Accounting, a father, brother, uncle and husband.
I am not a critique with an imbalance judgement, but as an ONNA son, with the battle axe “pen” in my possession, I think there is a need to drag the attention of the Governor and the Chief Whip of the State House Assembly into this serious malady quagmire, facing the Otoabasi Andrew Essien’s family, who have spent their little savings in dialysis at the prestigious Braithwaite Hospital, Port Harcourt, Rivers State since 2015.
ESRD’s treatment specifics are dialysis or kidney transplant. The kidney transplant is capital intensive but dialysis as being informed cost One Hundred and Fifty thousand (N150, 000.00)per week, and it’s undergone for three Months. Putting up a tabular assumed costing for a period of three Months of Emem Essien’s hospital bills, it runs into One Million two hundred Thousand Naira (N1,200,000.00); coming in a recession driven economy. The family confessed that the Chief Whip had given a donation of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N150, 000.00), though appreciable but not enough to perform the dialysis twice of the total number performed since inception.
I am convinced that the very tight schedules of His Excellency or the bureaucracy in the government might be the reason for delayed response to the letters sent to the Governor, wife etc. in this regards for help. In other to mitigate a reoccurrence of this sort, there is a need for government to establish public opinion box for complaints to avert deafening ear and stiff reactions in getting to the appropriate quarters that might be delayed like this.
Going by the Dakkada ideology and the FEYREP objectives, the well-being of the people is paramount, negating this pivotal part of governance questions the genuineness of ‘government of the peoples’ slogan.
Without indicting the government on assumptions, I am aware that several letters has been sent to the Governor and Her Excellency but all to no avail
I am also in the know that the Governor is friend of the people, whose genuine intent is to curb the cancer in health, jobs, security etc. I also know that the mother of the poor, Her Excellency, Mrs. Martha Udom will never sleep on hearing that her son is suffering excruciating pains from the deadly ESRD, lost of vison and might kick the bucket if not attended to urgently.
This is a call to save a life that stands productive even in this situation, it is a call to show love as a government of the people, for the people, and by the people. The family is financially inept to continue the life support and dialysis. Their presumptuous medical bill of the kidney transplant in India or China varies between $10000-20000 USD, which is about Five- Ten Million Naira (N5-10, 000, 000.00). Our Governor is beyond such a life saving-token. Let posterity stand to emulate His Excellency for saving the life of his brother and son; in partial fulfillment of his campaign promises. Let the Udom’s administration be on the lips of the Otobasi Essien’s family as a mantra, which will act as a memorabilia that will be archived.
I implore His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel, Her Excellency, Mrs. Martha Udom, the chief whip of the House of Assembly, Hon. Nse Essien and every other spirit filled Akwa Ibom son to please as a matter of urgency, help foot the medical expenses and spiritual care of this young lad, for it is very critical.
